It was a quiet first round, with only 6 real upsets (not counting the three #9 seeds which advanced), and only two of those above an 11-seed. Only one of those six teams survived the second round, as #12 East seed Arkansas moved through Penn State and Marquette. The first top seed to fall was West #1 seed Purdue, upset by Georgia in the second round. Georgia was in turn eliminated by Syracuse in the Sweet Sixteen; only one upset was recorded in that round, as Southeast #1 Connecticut fell to Mississippi State.

The Bulldogs then proceeded to upend #2 Cincinnati, and the remaining #2 seed, Kansas, fell to Syracuse. Due to the assignments for the Final Four, however, the two surviving #1 seeds -- Kentucky and Massachusetts -- met in one semifinal, while Mississippi State and Syracuse met in the other. After UMass and Mississippi State were sent home (Massachusetts would later vacate this appearance due to payments made to Marcus Camby by an agent), Kentucky easily handled Syracuse for yet another NCAA title.

Connecticut, like Massachusetts, was forced to vacate its appearance due to eligibility issues.
