Alamo Bowl
The Alamo Bowl is a bowl game held at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas since 1993.
Originally, the Alamo Bowl was created to give a tie-in to the Southwest Conference, and their opponents would come from the Pac-10. Unfortunately, as part of the chaos which led to the SWC's breakup three years later, only two teams were bowl-eligible in 1993, and the Alamo was slated for the SWC's third choice. In the following two seasons, the SWC was able to meet its commitment, but by this time the bowl had already realized it needed to find another tie-in.
Beginning in 1996, the bowl began matching a Big Ten Conference team against the SWC's successor, the Big 12 Conference. That arrangement remained in place until 2010, when the Pac-10 returned in place of the Big Ten. During this time, the bowl's place in the Big 12 hierarchy has increased; the bowl used to receive the conference's fifth pick, but is now third in line behind the BCS (Fiesta Bowl, generally) and the Cotton Bowl.
