The Division II Lambert Cup is presented to the team selected by poll as the best Division II team in the East each football season. The Division II Lambert Cup is reserved for NCAA Division II teams located in New England, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, as well as teams in Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Delaware, and the District of Columbia who play half their games against teams in the previous group. Teams in eastern-based conferences who also play half their games against Lambert-eligible teams are themselves eligible, although in practice this is currently irrelevant in Division II.
Prior to 1957, all teams geographically eligible were considered for the award regardless of their competition division; beginning in 1957, the Lambert Cup was instituted as an award for teams in the College Division. In 1966, the Lambert Cup was itself divided between "Division II" and "Division III", even though the NCAA had not yet divided its membership in this fashion; after 1973, the eligibility for the divisional awards coincided with the actual NCAA division in question. Similarly, in 1982 the Division II award was split between Division II and Division I FCS.
