The North Carolina Central University, or NCCU, Eagles compete as independents in NCAA Division I FCS football and NCAA Division I basketball, and will be joining the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference in both sports in 2011. NCCU (formerly "North Carolina College at Durham"), a historically black college, is a public institution located in the Triangle city of Durham, North Carolina. The school has an undergraduate enrollment of around 4,000.

The campus, about a mile south of downtown Durham, is bounded by Cecil Street to the south, Fayetteville Road to the west, Lawson Street to the north, and NC-55 (Alston Avenue) to the east. A quarter-mile north of campus is exit 11 off the NC-147 freeway, which is the NC-55 exit. McLendon-McDougald Gymnasium (3,056) is on the north side of campus at the corner of Lawson Street and Lincoln Street. Just to the south is O'Kelly-Riddick Stadium (10,000).

North Carolina A&T is UNCC's oldest rival, dating all the way back to the school's entrance into intercollegiate athletics. During the period of the Eagles' return to the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association, the position of primary rival was taken over by Winston-Salem State, but with UNCC's move to Division I that mantle is once again held by A&T. There's also a local cultural rivalry with Duke, although it's muted by a more positive historical bond: the two schools played in the very first integrated college basketball game back in 1944.

North Carolina Central has provided over 25 players to the NFL, including DBs Louis Breeden and Charles Romes and G Doug Wilkerson. Hall-of-Famer Sam Jones is the only Eagle to have reached the NBA, and Lee Davis had a seven-year career as the school's only alumnus in the ABA.
