The University of Oklahoma Sooners compete as members of the Big 12 Conference in NCAA Division I FBS football and in NCAA Division I basketball. Oklahoma is a public institution located in Norman, Oklahoma, about a half-hour south of Oklahoma City. The school has an undergraduate enrollment of around 21,000.
The campus occupies a wedge south of downtown Norman, bounded by Chautauqua Avenue on the west, Boyd Street on the north, Classen Boulevard on the east, and OK-9 on the south. Exit 108B off I-35 is the Lindsey Street exit, a mile west of campus; this leads to the north side of campus and to Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium (82,000), at the corner of Lindsey Street and Jenkins Avenue. Lloyd Noble Center (11,500) is at the south end, at the corner of Jenkins Avenue and Imhoff Road; it's more easily accessible via exit 108A (OK-9).
Oklahoma's main rival is Oklahoma State, but Texas is right there as well. Nebraska used to be up there too, but the lack of an annual game after the creation of the Big 12 put a damper on things, and Nebraska's departure for the Big 10 essentially cements it as a lukewarm rivalry. Tulsa is also a rival, albeit a minor one.
Sooners in the NFL? Oh, there have been a few. 296, to be exact. Those ranks include DB Bobby Boyd, DT Tony Casillas, TE Keith Jackson, WR Tommy McDonald, OL Ralph Neely, RB Greg Pruitt, DL Lee Roy Selmon, RB Billy Sims, and DB Roy Williams. Oklahoma football coaches have included notables such as Bud Wilkinson, Chuck Fairbanks, Barry Switzer, and Bob Stoops. Oklahoma is responsible for 21 NBA/ABA players, including Mookie Blaylock, Alvan Adams, Wayman Tisdale, Harvey Grant, and Garfield Heard.
