STORIES OFTEN TOLD

lyrics: J. Morse © 1986

I - Downward
Once upon a time, so the story goes
A young man grew tired of the drudgery of the day
Shattered by emotions, tired of the passion play
What was there yet to say?
He was an average man, held his own in the crowd
But never really stood out, save when he spoke his mind aloud
And he could never find love... just lies.
"Why isn't there anyone here for me?" he'd cry
   A man on his own
Stories often told of wasted youth
He was just wrong about himself
   A low opinion, nothing more
If he'd have just reached out and grabbed a hand
Found someone who'd try to understand
They were there for you, my friend
It's not too late... come back for them

The truth is obvious, what went on in his mind?
He never did imagine he'd find someone who'd be kind
When he was down, he'd bottle it all up inside
Hide his feelings in a mask of helpless, fatal pride
And when depression set in and he thought that all was lost
There was no way to pay the cost
"I don't need your help," and that was all...
And the friends he thought he didn't have
   Began to fade away...

II - The Path None See
The friends you thought you never had
Have all faded away...
"Don't interfere... just leave him alone with his tears."
There's only one way to the top
There's only one path to happiness
Can you find a reason to be?
Will you find the path none see?
   The pressure's on
Is it too much to bear?
   You're afraid
   You see the caring stare
   Of people who love you
Yeah, they've got the nerve to care
   Now you're vanishing
   Vanished into air...
And they say if the path is ever found
In the mist, echoes of sound will hide the tears
Of the lonely man afraid to show his fears
The fading spectre, his emotions gone astray
Must be convinced to return and face another day
Anything that we can say
Must be said, to break the spell
Release him from his hell
And show him we really cared...
   The story's growing old.
