The Lambuth University Eagles ceased competition -- and operations -- in 2011 due to financial difficulties and loss of accreditation. At the time, the school was competing as an independent in NAIA Division I Basketball and NAIA Football, and were actually in the process of moving to NCAA Division II. Lambuth was a private Methodist institution located in Jackson, Tennessee, about 90 minutes east of Memphis.
Upon its closure, the campus was immediately purchased by the University of Memphis, which is now utilizing it as a four-year branch campus known as University of Memphis-Lambuth. Should Memphis-Lambuth begin offering intercollegiate athletics, it will be treated as a separate entity.
