The Minnesota State University, Moorhead Dragons compete as members of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference in NCAA Division II football and basketball. Minnesota State-Moorhead, formerly "Moorhead State", is a public institution located in Moorhead, Minnesota, just across the state line from Fargo, North Dakota. The school has an undergraduate enrollment of around 8,000.

The campus is in the southeastern part of Moorhead, the "twin" city to larger Fargo, located between 14th and 20th Streets south, and 2nd and 9th Avenues South. Concordia-Moorhead is a half-mile away to the west. Exits 1A and 1B of Interstate 94 are the closest exits to the campus. Both the stadium (5,000) and fieldhouse (4,000) are named after the same person, Alex Nemzek, a long time football coach and athletics director at the school. Alex Nemzek Stadium is at the corner of 17th Street and 8th Avenue.

Though Concordia-Moorhead still manages to get on the nerves of the Dragon faithful, the main antagonist these days is Bemidji State, 135 miles to the northeast. North Dakota State in nearby Fargo used to be one as well (albeit a minor one), but the rivalry has diminished recently as the Bison have moved up in class.

Ted Nemzek, the son of Alex, is the lone Dragon to play in the NFL, playing a handful of games in 1930. No one from the basketball program has made it to the NBA just yet.
