The Gator Bowl is a bowl game held in Jacksonville, Florida since 1946. The first two games were held at Fairfield Stadium, which was then expanded and renamed the Gator Bowl; the game stayed there through the 1993 season, after which the original stadium was demolished. In 1994, the game was played at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville, Florida during construction of the new stadium, now called EverBank Field, where the game has been held since 1995.

When the game began, it featured a team from the Southern Conference against an at-large opponent. Beginning in 1953 (after the defection of the Atlantic Coast Conference teams from the Southern Conference), the Southeastern Conference took over primary hosting duties, although occasionally the SEC would not participate. In 1996, the bowl switched to an ACC/Big East Conference matchup, after 2006, the bowl's tie-ins became convoluted. In 2010, the Big Ten Conference and SEC began meeting in the game.
