NAIA District 18 Men's Basketball

NAIA District 18 originally consisted of NAIA schools in Louisiana. After an incident in the 1956 NAIA tournament when McNeese State played Texas Southern, an HBCU, the state of Louisiana refused to allow its schools to participate, and from 1957 to 1964 the district did not hold playoffs. In 1965, the district swapped designations with District 30; as such, District 18 was reassigned to Western Pennsylvania, where it remained until the abolition of the district qualification system.

When the NAIA split into divisions in 1992, all Division I schools in District 18, District 19, and District 31 were merged into District 18, while all Division II schools in districts 18 and 19 were assigned to District 19.

Primary sources for information on this district include the Pittsburgh Press, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, and Beaver County Times. There is no primary source for the Louisiana period.

Formats

1957-64: No playoffs were conducted, due to the refusal of the state of Louisiana to permit its colleges and universities with NAIA membership to play HBCU's and schools with integrated rosters(Vice versa, HBCU schools in the state could not play white-only teams).

1968-76: Four-team format

1977-78; 1992-93: Six-team format.

† - Alliance had also won the 1963 District 30 title. Westminster (PA) had previously won five District 30 titles (including four straight from 1959-1962).
