NAIA District 18 originally consisted of NAIA schools in Louisiana. When the NAIA began allowing black colleges to participate in 1957, the state of Louisiana refused to allow its schools to participate, and from 1957 to 1964 the district was unassigned. In 1965, the district swapped designations with District 30; as such, District 18 was reassigned to Western Pennsylvania, where it remained until the abolition of the district qualification system.

When the NAIA split into divisions in 1992, all Division I schools in District 18 and District 19 were merged into District 18, while all Division II schools in both districts were assigned to District 19.

Primary sources for information on this district include the Pittsburgh Press, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, and Beaver County Times. There is no primary source for the Louisiana period.
